Autumn Brings Joy and Energy: A Gibbon-Themed Family Sports Carnival

· Restoring Habitat for Gibbons

On November 1, the Pfizer OG19 Family Carnival was joyfully held at the JingAn Workers’ Stadium, bringing together more than 150 children and parents for a day of shared fun and activity. In addition to a range of traditional sports events, Shanghai Roots & Shoots specially organized a small-scale gibbon-themed sports meet. Through active play, participants learned about wildlife while helping to spread awareness of habitat conservation, joining in the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Pfizer Shanghai R&D Center.

During the gibbon-themed parent-child relay activities, staff from Shanghai Roots & Shoots first introduced basic knowledge about gibbons to the audience, posing questions such as whether gibbons have tails and what kinds of food they prefer. These interactive moments helped set the stage for learning through movement and play.

The relay events that followed challenged both physical ability and teamwork. Participants were invited to imitate the swinging movements of gibbons traveling through forest canopies, testing arm strength and balance. Families then learned to identify different primates while running and jumping together to complete a hopscotch challenge. The excitement peaked with a sprint relay, where teams raced to identify the foods most loved by gibbons from a variety of options.

Throughout the sports meet, children transformed into “forest guardians,” experiencing the survival wisdom of gibbons through engaging and playful challenges. The winning teams received commemorative gifts and certificates in support of the Eastern Black Crested Gibbon Habitat Restoration Project. While enjoying the games and sports, families also took meaningful action by showing their support for the restoration and protection of gibbon habitats.
