History of Roots & Shoots Groups
1991年
Dr. Jane Goodall founded the world's first Roots & Shoots group in Tanzania. The mission is to foster respect and compassion for all living things, to promote understanding of all cultures and beliefs, and to inspire each individual to take action to make the world a better place for animals, the environment, and the human community. We believe that change is already taking place!
1999年
Roots & Shoots was officially established in Shanghai. Its mission is to provide quality environmental education for young students. It serves a large number of environmental school groups and provides sustainable development education courses and trainings to member schools. Shanghai American School, Shanghai No.3 Girls' High School, and Shanghai Changning International School were the first three schools to join. Since then, the Roots & Shoots group has grown in number, with children from kindergarten to university taking actions to shape the future of the world!
2025年
Over 430 schools of all levels have joined and registered with Shanghai Roots & Shoots. It provides the green leadership trainings for group leaders every academic year. This training aims to cultivate students' teamwork skills, strengthen their resolve, broaden their horizons, and provide more opportunities for them to participate in environmental protection initiatives. For more than 20 years, school groups have grown alongside Roots & Shoots, actively participating in charity activities across various sectors, including communities, businesses, and schools.
Achievements of Roots & Shoots Groups
R&S Day Celebration
The Roots & Shoots Day Celebration is an annual event established to recognize outstanding Roots & Shoots groups and has been successfully held since 2004. Every year, Shanghai Roots & Shoots gives the groups evaluation and review of their work and selects outstanding groups, individuals, and mentors. On-site, group members also showcase their group's annual achievements and projects, and exchange experiences with each other.
Green Leadership Training
Since 2011, Shanghai Roots & Shoots has provided green leadership trainings to school group and club leaders. This training aims to cultivate students' cooperative spirit, strengthen their willpower, broaden their horizons, enhance their overall quality, and provide more opportunities for them to participate in environmental protection practices. The goal is to allow the concept of "young people leading young people, young people influencing young people, and young people changing young people" to take root in Shanghai.
Evergrowing Groups
Over 430 R&S groups are active in schools of all levels and types, spanning Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Guangxi, Guangdong, Hubei, Shaanxi, Shandong, Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, and other provinces.
