Roots & Shoots Groups
Since the founding of Shanghai Roots & Shoots, we have established strong cooperative relations with more than 430 schools in Eastern and South-eastern China where young students have launched creative programs and activities. They have learned much about project planning and management of volunteers. Additionally, the students got to enrich their social experience. Most importantly, thexperienced significant change directly resulting from their actions.

R&S Volunteers in Action
As we continue to expand, we are implementing more and more meaningful programs and activities. Our volunteers are the core of our organization, dedicating their time, skills, and passion to help us build a greener future. In recent years, our volunteer group has kept growing, every year with an average of 240 new volunteers joining us, 220 volunteers participating in our programs and activities, contributing more than 3,500 hours of service in total. These volunteers are actively engaged in activities focusing on "caring for the environment, animals and community". They help to bring green classes to schools, advocate for sustainable lifestyles, and even travel to remote areas to fight desertification!

Herbs Take Root in Three Cities, Growing Green Values in Young Hearts
September carried herbal scents and autumn's promise. Partnering with L'Occitane en Provence volunteers, Shanghai Roots & Shoots ran herb garden planting activities at three schools in Hangzhou, Qingdao and Beijing. Covering kindergarten to middle school across north and south China, the events engaged 87 students and 45 volunteers. These gardens combined corporate volunteer action with experiential environmental education, sowing seeds of responsibility and growth in youth.

Shanghai Roots & Shoots Student Leaders Gathering Wraps Up
The 2026 Shanghai Roots & Shoots Student Leaders Gathering has successfully concluded. The event served not only as an ice-breaking and networking opportunity for newly appointed student leaders from Roots & Shoots groups across China, but also as the launch of the first session of the “Carbon-Friendly Beautiful Life” series under the Green Leadership Program. Through fun, interactive activities, students explored practical ways to embrace a low-carbon lifestyle in their everyday lives.

2026 Ningxia Eco Trip
In 2015, the Shanghai Roots & Shoots Million Tree Project (MTP) reached a major turning point with the launch of its Ningxia Desertification Control Project. In the same year, MTP partnered with the Ningxia Lingwu Baijitan National Nature Reserve to plant the first forest together. In 2017, MTP expanded its collaboration with the Baijitan Reserve, and that partnership has continued ever since. Over the past decade, the project has steadily taken root in Baijitan. By the end of 2025, MTP had restored a total of 713 hectares of desertified land within the reserve and planted over 2.14 million shrubs.

Shanghai Roots & Shoots participated in the conference as a UNCCD civil society observer, bringing the frontline practices of Chinese civil society organizations and young people in combating desertification to the global stage — a precious journey from local practice to global dialogue.

Unlocking the City’s "Green Code": Dragon Recycling Hosts Family Eco-Trips
During the school holidays, the Shanghai Roots & Shoots Dragon Recycling Project teamed up with the Chang'er and Guangqi communities to organize several exciting family eco-trips. Dozens of families transformed into "eco-detectives", stepping out of the classroom to visit real environmental facilities. Through field visits and fun games, kids and parents discovered the city's "green recycling code" together.

First Volunteer Survey of Guangxi Gibbon Habitat Restoration Plot
From July 5 to 11, 2026, the first volunteer survey of the Guangxi gibbon habitat restoration plot trial project was successfully carried out in Genglao Tun, Zhenyi Village, Renzhuang Township, Jingxi City, Baise, Guangxi. A team of seven volunteers, together with staff from Shanghai Roots & Shoots and local forest rangers, spent one week overcoming significant challenges posed by heavy rainfall, high humidity, and karst terrain.
