In support of the "Beautiful China" Initiative, The Walt Disney Company (China) Limited and the China Environmental Protection Foundation (CEPF) co-launched the Disney Nature Conservation Project. Sponsored by this initiative and executed by Shanghai Roots & Shoots, the "Zero Waste π - Circular Symbiosis Project" has successfully concluded across three pilot communities in Shanghai.
The project introduced three innovative community spaces: the Upcycle Station, the Community Green Hub, and the Sharing Corner. Directly engaging over 3,200 participants and indirectly reaching more than 10,000 residents, the project has provided solid grassroots governance outcomes for the development of a "Zero-waste City."
Upcycle Station: Where Waste is Reborn
The Upcycle Station serves as the central hub for the community's circular economy. Through all-category recycling drives and the unique "Baofu (Unburden) Market," the station engaged over 2,860 participants. It also introduced a "Carbon Coin" system, leading to the collection of over 2.1 metric tons of recyclables and achieving an estimated 19 metric tons in carbon reduction.
Following professional sorting, a portion of these materials was transformed into recreational facilities made from recycled plastic and returned to the pilot communities. This allowed residents to witness firsthand the tangible outcomes of a closed-loop resource cycle.
Community Green Hub: An Eco-Loop from Classroom to Community
The Community Green Hub serves as a neighborhood focal point for household food waste reduction and upcycling.
Under the guidance of Roots & Shoots and the dedicated care of community volunteers, the project launched parent-child composting workshops. Furthermore, by utilizing the deployed 110L aerobic compost bins, the initiative successfully reduced 2,000 liters of household food waste at the source, producing 330 kilograms of premium organic fertilizer.
In the final phase, the matured compost was distributed in full to participating families and community gardening teams, making the ecological cycle a reality within the community.
Sharing Corner: Creative Renewal of Idle Items
The Sharing Corner is dedicated to turning the concept of "circulation over consumption" into an everyday habit for residents. Tailored to the actual conditions of community spaces, the project adopted a centralized exchange model, successfully facilitating the circulation of over 600 idle items, including books and toys.
Additionally, through upcycling workshops, families were guided to use recycled coffee grounds to craft over 200 eco-friendly fridge magnets that are both aesthetic and practical. This immersive artistic upcycling effectively extended the lifespan of materials while adding a human touch to the community.
Through these innovative spaces and activities, environmental ideals have been translated into tangible actions: at the Sharing Corner, idle items find new owners; at the Community Green Hub, food waste is turned into rich soil; and at the Upcycle Station, discarded bottles are given a second life.
The project saw the dedicated involvement of 94 volunteers. It is exactly this power of volunteerism that has allowed the concept of "circular symbiosis" to truly take root among residents.
Special thanks to The Walt Disney Company (China) Limited and the China Environmental Protection Foundation for their generous funding, as well as to the Chang'er Community (Changning District), Guangqi Community (Huangpu District), and Suicheng Community (Pudong New Area) for their tremendous support!
