Corporate Sustainability Workshop | Nut-Shell Chimes & Biodiversity Discovery — Activity Review

· SRS News

To welcome World Environment Day 2026, Shanghai Roots & Shoots brought a sustainable crafts workshop to our partners at Standard Chartered. Combining natural handcrafts with ecological education, the workshop guided participants to explore the wonders of biodiversity hidden in nut shells, spreading a green, sustainable way of life through hands-on practice.

The workshop unfolded in four parts. The first part was a knowledge exploration session. The instructor began by explaining the significance of World Environment Day, then introduced the basic concepts of biodiversity across three dimensions — genetic, species, and ecosystem — and explained the vital importance of species diversity to the ecological balance of our planet. Drawing on real specimens, the instructor then gave a detailed introduction to a variety of distinctive nut shells and seeds, explaining the ecological functions, physical characteristics, dispersal methods, and identification points of different plants.

The second part was hands-on crafting. A full set of materials and tools was prepared on site, including a rich variety of nut shells and seeds, braided hemp rope, and more. Participants first freely conceived the design of their chimes, then completed the steps one by one: drilling holes, threading seeds, attaching bells, and weaving hanging-ring decorations. Instructors guided everyone to match materials freely according to the texture and color of the shells, creating their own one-of-a-kind natural chimes amid a lively atmosphere of creation.

The third part was a sharing and reflection session. Once the crafts were complete, participants took turns presenting their handmade nut-shell chimes, sharing the plant knowledge and creative inspiration they had gained, and exchanging their renewed understanding of "turning waste into treasure." Many participants proactively shared the small eco-friendly habits they planned to adopt in their daily lives. No longer limited to passive listening, everyone took part in a fully immersive experience of seeing, learning, making, and sharing, with great enthusiasm for participation.

After the event, participants brought their handmade nut-shell chimes home — a natural craft that serves as an ongoing reminder to care for nature and conserve resources. The workshop achieved learning through fun, translating ecological awareness into a tangible, actionable lifestyle philosophy, effectively guiding people to take initiative in caring about biodiversity and protecting the Earth's resources through small, everyday actions.
